So much of this is highlight-able and mirrors my own thoughts, Cat!
Two of my family members are extremely passionate about politics and the current events, they’re constantly battling each other (they often have rather different opinions). When they ask me for my opinion (likely as a way of saying “see! He agrees with me!”) my response is usually that on the lines of “since I don’t have an informed opinion, I’d rather not get involved in the debate”, which usually causes a sulk or two.
I find there’s also a weird cultural moral standard, at least in the West, rising in which one HAS to be informed about current events (and have strong opinions on them) otherwise we are displaying poor citizenship. But is it really that selfish for me to not want the news and social media taking over my life?
